Boosting Accessibility: Enhancing Employment Opportunities for Disabled Persons in Australia's Tourism Industry

On 3rd June 2023, the Albanese Labor Government released a significant media statement showcasing their continued commitment to augmenting employment opportunities for people with disability, with an emphasis on jobs within the tourism sector. At Sunsets Disability Support Services, we are excited about such initiatives that help to shape a more inclusive society for people with disabilities in Australia.

The government plans to allocate $3 million among twelve organisations across Australia to advocate for greater workforce participation of disabled persons in the visitor economy. This initiative springs from the outcomes of the Jobs and Skills Summit that took place in September 2022. The upcoming project, titled the ‘Disability Employment Tourism Local Navigators Pilot’, will explore novel methods of linking job seekers with disabilities to rewarding tourism jobs.

The scheme casts Local Navigators in a crucial role, serving as connectors between tourism businesses, employment service providers and people with disability. They will spearhead the modification of workplace cultures and employment practices, whilst concurrently boosting employer confidence to hire, retain and promote employees with disability.

Minister for Trade and Tourism, Don Farrell, has affirmed that these projects would aid in addressing the skills and workplace shortages and bolster the resilience of Australia’s tourism industry in the post-COVID-19 era.

Simultaneously, Minister for Social Services, Amanda Rishworth, underscored the role of Local Navigators in mitigating enduring obstacles to employment for disabled individuals. Unfortunately, the labour force and employment participation rates for people with disabilities have remained disappointingly low for more than twenty years. This government endeavour seeks to reverse this trend.

The Pilot is slated to begin in early July 2023 and will run for twelve months. It will operate across several priority employment areas in Australia. Some of the financed projects include programmes by the Hospitality Disability Network WA Inc, On-Q Human Resources Limited, and Project Etico Australia Limited.

Sunsets Disability Support Services celebrates these developments and looks forward to more such government initiatives that lead the way towards a more inclusive job market. As a disability support service, we understand the significance of such schemes in the creation of a society that is accepting and accessible to all individuals, irrespective of their physical capabilities.

We stand by the belief that with appropriate support and opportunity, individuals with disabilities can not only participate in but can significantly contribute to the vibrant palette that is Australia’s tourism sector.
